It’s been a dream of mine to not just travel the world, but, to live around the world experiencing culture the way a local does. Not one to just talk the talk, last year I left my budding PR career in Manhattan when I was presented an opportunity to turn this dream into a reality — teaching English! I thought I would be away for four months and I ended up staying the full year. Spending 2012 in Thailand was incredible and now I WANT MORE!
Next stop… Australia! And this time I won’t be teaching. To be honest, I don’t know what work I’ll find or where I’ll be living. A little crazy? I guess so. But to not follow your dream would be crazier.
For those of you who want to know if I’m scared. YES! I’m terrified. but, “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.”
I’m taking a chance on the world down under and I invite you to travel with me :)

I’m a Japanese student studying in the U.S. and I have a similar goal to you (living and working locally in different countries) My friends tell me I’m just being crazy cuz I’m still in high school, but I know that’s what I really wanna do in my future. I’ve spent the last 3/4 years running my own business in London and frankly, I’m a bit bored… I think I might join you for a bit.
It’s actually quite strange reading your articles… Especially when you talk about your ideals/outlook on life. It’s like my own thoughts coming out of someone else’s mouth (or fingertips). The only difference is that you decided to say “fuck it” a little earlier than me.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ve enjoyed entertaining my entrepreneurial streak for the past few years. It’s taught me a great deal and it’s been fruitful at times. However, I’m very aware of the fact that I’ll be 25 at the end of this year and all of a sudden, being rich and successful doesn’t interest me nearly as much as seeing the world and all it’s beauty.
I think it’s time to make the most of being a young and exuberant 20-something. I plan to spend the rest of the year getting my affairs in order, and hopefully I can disappear around Christmas time. Depending on where you are in the world, maybe we can arrange to cross paths, or even align them for a short while? (Please note, this will largely depend on climate… I won’t be hanging around in the article for any length of time, put it that way!).

I am thinking of moving to Australia too, but have NO idea what type of neighborhood is fun/safe for people our age (22-26). I want to be near the beach, oh, and I want to be able to afford it. Any suggestions on this!?? I have no idea the geography although I know I would probably work in North Sydney and the idea of Bondi Beach is appealing, but I really have no idea what I am talking about. Do you have an overview of places young people live in Oz? How they get around?

Hi Kate! My friend and I are starting our process of applying for the working holiday visa subclass 462 right now. We are currently seniors in college and are graduating in May with the hopes of moving to Sydney in early September. Do you know if this visa is pretty much guaranteed if we meet all of the requirements or is there a chance we might not be accepted? Would hate to pay the application fee if we might not get in! Please let us know :)
