It’s been a dream of mine to not just travel the world, but, to live around the world experiencing culture the way a local does. Not one to just talk the talk, last year I left my budding PR career in Manhattan when I was presented an opportunity to turn this dream into a reality — teaching English! I thought I would be away for four months and I ended up staying the full year. Spending 2012 in Thailand was incredible and now I WANT MORE!
Next stop… Australia! And this time I won’t be teaching. To be honest, I don’t know what work I’ll find or where I’ll be living. A little crazy? I guess so. But to not follow your dream would be crazier.
For those of you who want to know if I’m scared. YES! I’m terrified. but, “If your dreams don’t scare you, they’re not big enough.”
I’m taking a chance on the world down under and I invite you to travel with me :)
Hi Kate,
I just needed to tell you how inspiring your blog is!! I’m a Japanese student studying in the U.S. and I have a similar goal to you (living and working locally in different countries) My friends tell me I’m just being crazy cuz I’m still in high school, but I know that’s what I really wanna do in my future. Thank you for making awsome posts and good luck in whichever country you’ll go next :)
Kate from the states.
I’ve spent the last 3/4 years running my own business in London and frankly, I’m a bit bored… I think I might join you for a bit.
It’s actually quite strange reading your articles… Especially when you talk about your ideals/outlook on life. It’s like my own thoughts coming out of someone else’s mouth (or fingertips). The only difference is that you decided to say “fuck it” a little earlier than me.
Don’t get me wrong. I’ve enjoyed entertaining my entrepreneurial streak for the past few years. It’s taught me a great deal and it’s been fruitful at times. However, I’m very aware of the fact that I’ll be 25 at the end of this year and all of a sudden, being rich and successful doesn’t interest me nearly as much as seeing the world and all it’s beauty.
I think it’s time to make the most of being a young and exuberant 20-something. I plan to spend the rest of the year getting my affairs in order, and hopefully I can disappear around Christmas time. Depending on where you are in the world, maybe we can arrange to cross paths, or even align them for a short while? (Please note, this will largely depend on climate… I won’t be hanging around in the article for any length of time, put it that way!).
Feel free to drop me a line on the email address provided or add me on Facebook. I may need the odd pep talk leading up to xmas ;)
Happy travels,
Stuart Ashley
Hi Kate,
I am thinking of moving to Australia too, but have NO idea what type of neighborhood is fun/safe for people our age (22-26). I want to be near the beach, oh, and I want to be able to afford it. Any suggestions on this!?? I have no idea the geography although I know I would probably work in North Sydney and the idea of Bondi Beach is appealing, but I really have no idea what I am talking about. Do you have an overview of places young people live in Oz? How they get around?
Hello Kate,
Could you give more detail on where you worked and lived in Australia – how did you find rent so cheap!
Thank you!
So thankful for all the information you have posted. I have written down all your wisdom and I’m in process of starting my own journey to Australia! I’m scared but you’ve helped a lot.
Hello Kate,
I have fallen in love with your work! Your values are a perfect fit for the growing community of women I am gathering who are searching for direction, purpose and clarity. I would be honored if you could join me in as one of 21+ Inspiring Experts to speak in my free, online 14-day Tele-summit called The Adventure Revolution launching November 9th with promotions beginning October 19th!
My vision for this event is to help women who are struggling with understanding their authentic path to find their life work shaped by global travel. I believe when a woman relishes in her curiosity for adventure and is able to reflect on what she wants for her life despite her past, then she can fully embrace her path to success. This includes empowering women to reconnect and to discover practices that enable them to self-express and cultivate self-awareness in order to make decisions around their life’s work.
Do you think you could add value to this conversation? Would you like to?
Time sensitive: We are just now issuing invitations and expect to confirm all speakers within 21 days. We are currently designing a new web page for this event and will notify you when it is live.
Ready to confirm your placement? Please see below for your next step.
We are in the process of scheduling recorded interviews. As someone I admire, I would like to invite you to a 15-minute exploratory call, because I believe you could be a wonderful fit for this event. In our call, you will learn about Speaker Collaborative Requirements, ask any questions you’d like, and if we are a match (I have high hopes we are), book your pre-recorded interview date.
Pre-recorded audio interviews are 30-40 minutes, and we expect between 2,000- 5,000 attendees. Total marketing exposure will be to 105,000+ people.
I look forward to bringing your wisdom and presence to my audience.

Hi Kate! My friend and I are starting our process of applying for the working holiday visa subclass 462 right now. We are currently seniors in college and are graduating in May with the hopes of moving to Sydney in early September. Do you know if this visa is pretty much guaranteed if we meet all of the requirements or is there a chance we might not be accepted? Would hate to pay the application fee if we might not get in! Please let us know :)
